Vacuum Forming - Thermoforming - CNC Machining

Polyethylene is one of the most widely used thermoplastics, available in several variations such as standard Polyethylene, HMWPE (High Molecular Weight Polyethylene), and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Of these, HDPE is by far the most common, valued for its strength, durability, and versatility across countless applications. Because of its prevalence and importance in manufacturing, we will primarily be focusing on HDPE when discussing polyethylene materials.

What is HDPE?

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is a petroleum-based thermoplastic polymer recognized for its exceptional strength-to-density ratio. This unique balance makes it both lightweight and remarkably durable. In addition to its strength, HDPE offers excellent resistance to impact, moisture, and a broad range of chemicals, making it a reliable material for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor applications.

What is HDPE Vacuum Forming?

Vacuum forming is a manufacturing process in which a heated sheet of HDPE plastic is softened and then stretched over a mold. A vacuum is applied to draw the plastic tightly against the mold’s surface, capturing its exact shape. Once cooled and hardened, the HDPE retains the mold’s form, resulting in a durable, precisely shaped product.

Vacuum Forming & Thermoforming Grade HDPE Sheet

Not all HDPE sheets are created equal. For vacuum forming, it’s essential to use a grade of HDPE designed to handle the heating and forming process without becoming brittle or losing strength. At Waveform Plastics, we work exclusively with high-quality, vacuum-forming grade HDPE sheets to deliver durable, reliable results for every custom product.

Property

Description

Typical Applications

Impact Resistance

  • HDPE is known for its excellent impact resistance, making it a preferred choice for applications that demand durability and long-lasting toughness.

Protective housings, equipment enclosures

Moisture Resistance

  • HDPE provides excellent moisture resistance, preventing water absorption and maintaining its strength even in damp or wet conditions.

Water storage tanks, marine applications

Heat Resistance

  • HDPE maintains reliable performance across a broad temperature range, typically from -50 °C to 80 °C (-58 °F to 176 °F). This stability makes it suitable for applications where both cold and moderate heat resistance are required.

Outdoor equipment, piping systems

Chemical Resistance

  • HDPE exhibits very good chemical resistance, particularly against diluted acids, alkalis, alcohols, and many solvents.

Chemical storage tanks, agricultural sprayer tanks

Cost

  • HDPE is a cost-effective material, offering excellent performance and durability at a relatively low price point compared to many other plastics.
